Al Shazly’s sound installation combines passport stamps and black-and-white passport photography with hued floral textiles. Her title comments on individuality, gender, fashion, the contemporary, freedom of movement and belonging in relation to the flattening bureaucracy of documentation and public records as alternately freeing/binding; and as portraits within a specific context.
Featured in the exhibition, Beyond Classification, curated by artist-scholar Nagla Samir, American University Cairo; US organizer, artist-professor Greg Pond, Sewanee University.
Installation View: Second Street Gallery, Virginia Film Festival, Digital Media Gallery (Oct/Nov 2015).
