Undercurrents
Audio-video installation, 2015
Two-channel projection on adjacent walls (corner installation), two video players, two audio systems.
This two-channel mixed media video installation blends performance art with environmental video practices, capturing durational, site-specific actions in dialogue with the natural landscape.
In Undercurrents, Mai Al Shazly explores the tension between resistance and submission, drawing from B.F. Skinner’s notion that “resistance is a human reaction to another human action.” Through dual-channel projection, two parallel narratives unfold—one embodying confrontation and agency, the other reflecting dependency and passivity.
The spatial divide between the projections becomes a charged threshold where opposing forces meet. A restrained figure grapples with an invisible aggressor, while the calm, looping rhythm of ocean waves evokes emotional fatigue. The ambient soundscape bubbles on, indifferent—underscoring a quiet sense of frustration and psychological confinement.
